Our Story
“Space for You began in late 2009, in response to a lack of public sector service provision for a friend of mine with emotional health issues. The help that is available for people with depression, anxiety or lack of self-esteem, who are not in immediate crisis, was and still is somewhat limited.
We, the Trustees, wanted to offer sessions that were available quickly, to anyone interested, at an affordable price and without the need for a referral. With the help of creatives and fellow health professionals, we began offering drop-in creative sessions on Wednesdays for people who felt emotionally vulnerable.
Between 2010 and 2018 we saw around 250 people come to the project. Feedback showed that the people who came enjoyed the sessions and Space For You’s friendly atmosphere. Some benefited instantly, whilst others became gradually more stable. Some people found creative workshops to be a helpful way to de-stress and get away from the rhetoric in their heads, others found it helped them with their self-esteem and coping ability, gradually feeling more able and confident over time.
Many made friends with other participants and found the social side helpful in dispelling loneliness or isolation. One client moved on to study art at college and later became a teacher. The project in general seemed to help anchor people in a creative and friendly community setting.
Now a registered charity, Space For You continues to offer creative workshops twice a week, at our spacious premises on Penzance Promenade. Here, we offer art materials and creative workshops with the help of our operational team and art teachers. As a team, it is our aim to continue to transform lives for the better, through supporting improved access to creativity and connection with others.”
